Brighter Death Now is the artist name under which Roger Karmanik, the founder of the Swedish record label Cold Meat Industry, releases death industrial, power electronics and dark ambient music. Throughout its history, Karmanik has kept his music's thematic elements focused on such topics as child molestation, sadism, and psychosis. The imagery of BDN's releases largely employs skulls, bones, corpses, death and decay. Still Karmanik never lacks to show the dark humorous side of his personality.

Boyd Rice - Ragnarok Rune (1992)

I got my information from Wikipedia and Discogs and other sources around the net...

Ragnarok Rune was originally released as a one sided 12" EP with a one track endless loop grove on the deceased World Serpent. Interestingly enough, World Serpent didn't release that many albums. Normally World Serpent worked as a distributor. However, the few they did release are classics. Another point of interest on this release is that originally it was intended to be released by Douglas P.'s New European Recordings (NER) label. Douglas felt he did not have the time to spend on Ragnarok Rune and it was picked up by World Serpent.

Ragnarok Rune is playable at any speed, much like the early NON/Boyd Rice recordings of the 1970's. When it was released on CD, much to the dismay of Boyd₁, the track was recorded at three speeds as separate tracks. 45rpm, 33 rpm, and 78 rpm. The B side of the album features a carved vinyl rune and contains no audio track. No doubt this was one of the first chinks in the armor between Boyd and World Serpent.

NON - Pagan Muzak (1978) (repost)

Originally released in 1978 and then re-released in 1981 and 1999, also released as a boot titled "Live & "Pagan Musick" in 1984 with side A featuring a live track from 1984, and side B which featured Pagan Muzak and a "disco remix" of something.

The original 1978 release features a One-sided 7" in 12" cover. Contains 17 loop grooves, playable at any speed. Also has second hole for off axis playback. First pressing contained one side with grooves, the other blank.

The 1981 reissue release features has the same lock grooves on both sides.

The 1999 reissue release is identical to the 1978 release.

Here is the write up from the Mute web page, I edited it down because some of it bored me;

Boyd Rice is too wise to the ways of the world to start plea-bargaining now about the impact, for good or evil, of NON's early noise purges. Then, he doesn't need to, the timely reissue of Pagan Muzak speaks volumes. First released in 1978, Pagan Muzak is a 7" vinyl long playing record housed in a 12" sleeve. It consists of 17 locked/looped grooves, each of them containing a different noise. A second axis hole drilled off-centre doubles the number of tracks; and as it can be played back at up to four speeds - 16, 33, 45 or 78rpm - working out just how many tracks Pagan Muzak effectively offers the listener involves complicated calculations of all the different playback combinations of axis choice, turntable speeds and the grooves themselves. The mind boggles, yet when it was sold as a long playing record, some buyers thought they'd been short-changed by at least five inches. Boyd recalls, "Because it came out as a 7" record in an album sleeve, people used to go,[in a whining voice] 'It says LP on here. . .' 'Well,' I said, 'LP means long player, and this is the longest player you are ever going to find'."

Between the record's peculiar format and the noises contained in its locked grooves, Pagan Muzak clearly anticipated the sound and shape of many music practices to come. Rice's radicalisation of vinyl reversed the listener's usual passive relationship with the record as a sound carrier. To listen to it meant first of all making 'musical' choices regarding pitch and tempo, dependent on playback axis and turntable speed. In this sense, putting on Pagan Muzak was a kind of rehearsal of a near future, when DJs and turntablists would play records as a musical instrument. 1978 - when Pagan Muzak was originally released - was coincidentally the year breakbeats first broke out in the Bronx, with DJs scratching the stylus across the grooves to intensify a climax in the same way rock groups would play guitar solos. However, the first HipHop and rap records featuring breaks, such as The Fatback Band's "King Tim III" and Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", only started coming out a year later. Over on the other coast, in his hometown San Diego, Rice had been exploring similar ideas, albeit from a completely different angle.

"I did stuff with turntables in the 70s," he says. "I took apart a bunch of different ones and tried to get weird sounds by having the needles removed from the arms and ran them into the grooves, but it just sounded so hokey, it sounded so obvious, I thought. I was looking at the time for noises, where people would say where did he get that sound from? But with this kind of technique, it obviously sounds like a record going 'Eecchuurgh, eecchuurgh'. . . So I stopped, then five or ten years later I started hearing all these people going eecchuurgh."

The idea for Pagan Muzak arose as a response to something said by the late John Cage - whose Cartridge Music was the first composition to feature records and players as musical components. Boyd explains, "I guess I got the inspiration for Pagan Muzak when I read some interview with John Cage. He said he didn't want to make records because the format was too fixed. Well I immediately thought that's ridiculous, nothing is too fixed. You can set something on the table and look at it from four different angles and it will look like four different things. And it is the same with records, you can play them at any different speed, you can put a second hole in them, play them off centre. That's where I got the idea for doing Pagan Muzak. "I made my first record playable at all four speeds. And on Pagan Muzak, I did the looped grooves, the locked grooves, and to my knowledge at that time, I didn't think that anybody had ever done a whole record of just locked grooves, though I have since been told that Linguaphone or somebody did them, 'Parlez vous francais, monsieur? Parlez vous. . .' You know, you repeat it until you got it. And somebody told me that the BBC had some looped groove records, which they used for sound effects in radio plays. But I didn't know about that. Since I was doing minimalist music that I just want people to be able to listen to it all day, it seemed logical to make a record with looped grooves."

It is fitting, then, that Mute's reissue of Pagan Muzak coincides with the revival of the vinyl record as a specialist format for vinyl lovers and DJs. As specialist records go, they don't come more special than Pagan Muzak. Possibly out of a reaction to the digital perfection of the compact disc, a strain of contemporary music from electronica through to post-rock has been working vinyl's scratches, glitches and deteriorating sound quality into a kind of minimal music, treating vinyl's surface crackle as a texture or processing sticking needle sounds into rhythm patterns. The medium's common defects, which Rice factored in to Pagan Muzak as special listening features, have become the very stuff of the music promoted by such glitch-worshipping minimalist labels as Ontario's Minus, Cologne's Kompakt and Vienna's Mego, among countless others around the world.

Meanwhile, a 'spray-on distortion/crackle' software tool has been designed to cater to a digital age nostalgia for the lost vinyl listening experience, allowing artists to bestow on their music the warm glow and authority of antiquity (for starters, check releases by Tarwater and Warn Defever). As its title implies, Pagan Muzak was also about using the vinyl record as an aid to engendering different moods and atmospheres. The name is both a description of the record's contents and a homage to Hawaii-based exotica pioneer Martin Denny, composer of environmental mood music that embraced such seemingly irreconcilable components as easy listening, unusual instruments, natural sounds and dissonance. Along with Les Baxter and Arthur Lyman, Denny became a hero to the so called Lounge/Space Age Batchelor Pad movement of the early 90s. "I was influenced by Martin Denny," Boyd confirms. "He was doing this stuff that was like muzak but it had these heathen overtones. I liked the idea of paganism and I thought it was like pagan muzak, because it was music to change your environment, fill it up with noise, fill your brain with noise, and I thought that was really a pagan concept.

Did Boyd have any particular functions in mind when he was laying down the locked grooves of Pagan Muzak? "I've heard from people working in record stores who say, 'We love your record. At the end of the day, we just have to put it on and it clears the store'. People have said it is good for housework, and other people have said it is good for sex. It is a very functional record. . . "If someone is getting too noisy upstairs, I put the record on. After you have had the noise going for an hour or so, it creates an artificial silence. You don't even realise it is there. It is like creating solitude, blocking out all the noises which really are distracting, which infringe on your consciousness. A girl I knew was pissed off with her neighbours, so we put this record on, locked the door and went up into the mountains, so the neighbours would have to listen to this for, like, 48 hours."

NON - Blood & Flame (1987)

Here's another fun recording from Boyd Rice/NON. Released in 1987 by Mute (CD STUMM 32 & STUMM 32 for the LP version), this recording marked a subtle change in Boyd's musical repertoire. Atmospheric and perhaps even a tad bit musical.

The following is from the MUTE web site;

'Blood And Flame' (1987) featured tracks that used repeated words as their source, a further development of Rice's psycho-acoustic research where the brain starts to interpret the loops causing the listener to hear different words or simply interpreting the repetition as a rhythm. Other tracks extended the possibilities for noise, building cycles of broad rhythms and textures into stunning constructs that take on an almost orchestral feel as they develop.

NON - Solitude 7" (2000)

This wonderful 7" single was released by Mute Records (Catalog#: MUTE 250) in 2000. This is a digital copy that I came across. The original user tried to use the alternate holes that are availiable with the release with some interesting results.

The following is taken from the discogs entry on the Solitude 7" single

This limited-edition 7" from NON (Boyd Rice) contains a full version of the track "Solitude" (which is taken from the LP "Receive the Flame") on the A side, and several locked groove noise loops on the B side, which are playable at any speed (i.e., 33, 45, 78). There is also a second hole drilled in the single, but good luck getting the needle to stay in any one particular groove while using this insane add-on of which Rice seems inordinately fond (e.g., his own "Black Album").

NON - Rise 12" (1982)

Here's one that's hard to find. Released by Mute Records (12 Mute 015) in 1982. This 12" vinyl release shows Boyd rice expanding his horizons. Moving beyond locked groves, this single explores Boyd's voice (screams) as well as generated rhythms. Dainel Miller also participated in this recording. "Out Out Out" was recorded at the infomus SO 36 club in Berlin. "Romance FatalDentro De Un" Auto was a sound track for a film by the same name.

NON - Sick Tour (1985)

I have never been sure if this was a official release or not until I read Boyd Rice requesting a copy of it on MySpace. One could only assume that Boyd wouldn't need a copy if he released it. So, were gonna call it a bootleg.

According to the liner notes, "This was recorded live in Europe on August 3, 1985 in the Netherlands." It was released on CD and on a one sided cassette tape, both in issues of 500 copies each. The cassette packaging was an over sized plastic bag with a full-colour silk screened paper insert measuring about 6x10 inches. It was also later re-released as a cassette, with only a J-card insert, also by Staalplaat.

Danny Devos (DDV) from Club Moral was kind enough to fill in a few more details about this release in the comment section... he wrote;

"the title "sick tour" refers to boyd being sick at the time of this tour, it could have been a regular flu or due to a physical reaction after having his (first) piercing done in london. he performed the same playlist at club moral on 7 march 1985, so the date in amsterdam is 8 march not 3 august. the gig was basically several cassettes played on 2 simultaneous decks mixed together. charles hayward (this heat) came over from london to assist boyd on his tour. there were about 20 to 25 people to watch the concert."

The lyrics on this recording were taken exclusively from Might Is Right, or The Survival of the Fittest, written by Ragnar Redbeard. It is considered to either advocate social Darwinism or satirize it, and was first published in 1896. In Might is Right, Redbeard rejects conventional ideas of human and natural rights and argues that only strength or physical might can establish moral right.

Might Is Right, or The Survival of the Fittest, is a bizarre mixture of Stirner's anarcho-individualism, Nietzsche's Will To Power and Darwin's evolutionary ideologies, Might Is Right was seized upon by leftists of the time and published in numerous countries. Today the book is enjoying a revival amongst the American marginal crowd as well as with pseudo-satanists and right wing libertarians.

Libertarian historian James J. Martin called it "surely one of the most incendiary works ever to be published anywhere."

Boyd Rice Presents - Death's Gladsome Wedding

Hymns And Marches From Transylvania's Notorious Legionari Movement.

Distributed by the sorley missed (by me at least) World Serpent, and released by Hierarchy (Catalog#: H 3303 CD) in 1996. The first edition of "Boyd Rice Presents" series was a compilation of hymns sung by the Romanian Iron Guard from the 1930s (also known as the Legionari Movement, this was Romania's primary pro-Axis, fascist organization before and during the War).

When I purchased this recording I was under the mistaken impression that it was a spoken word release with recordings of the Romanian Iron Gaurd as the background music. Something along the line of what we heard on "Music, Martini's...." I was quite disappointed with what I heard. This is truly only the Hymns And Marches From Transylvania's Notorious Legionari Movement. I will admit to only listening to it once... but upon the request I recieved yesterday I re-listened to the recording and found it quite powerful. With a little bit of understanding of what Boyd Rice was trying to preserve, and the history of the Romanian Iron Guard, as well as the fervor at which these recordings were undoubtedly made, I found this to be a truly an impressive release.

Two Divx samples from the new Despair DVD that's been released in an edition of 500 copies in the PAL format. I had no problem playing this on my computer ... I don't own a TV. You can buy it online (in Europe) or (in the USA). I know the US store accepts either VISA or PayPal, they ship quickly, email shipping confirmation - very professional. Tesco included a dozen different postcards with the DVD they sent, which were just as much fun as the movie.

I saw the VHS tape of this when it came out and I even made a pirate copy of it but I never watched it. The quality on the VHS was awful - really - it was unwatchable. And my copy was even worse. The quality on this DVD is impressive. Rather than indistinct blurs on the screen when SPK is doing a live show you can see actual people! There's fine detail and the the three 'music videos' with TV interference special effects have obviously been remastered from the original sources. While the effects do tend to dominate the three music videos, it's still amazing to see a very young Graeme Revelle handling the vocals on Slogun. There's no image softening as a result of second rate mpeg2 encoding here - the transfer is top notch and the encoding is perfect. Don't judge the DVD quality by my low-resolution copies! After being hidden in time for about 25 years, this industrial milestone of the infamous first generation has been renovated, extended and digitally reworked by CaTV. Cathy Vogan, Media Artist & Designer, has been nominated three times for a Video Art Award and received a ZKM (Karlsuhe) Production Award for her work!

A true statement and monument for the outstanding band S.P.K. who gathered together under so many names like: SoliPsiK, Selektiv Pornography Kontrol, Sozialistisches Patienten Kollektiv, System Planning Korporation just to name a few, and with this release a new name is created: "Schuldig an der Pervertierung der Kultur." Besides D. Guerin and CAT TV, another member needs to be mentoined: K. Osmosis is an active member - possibly the new "Neil" (Ni/H/IL)! He writes his solepsistic texts to the world from his cellat via his identical twin brother, in between paralyzing bouts of stimming. K.O. is in the process of articulating a fresh, theoretical foundation for the Kollective SPK, the only group in industrial music history that stands on the same level as Throbbing Gristle, even above for some.

An influence on so many followers, this is the ideal project to express the content of various psycho-pathalogical conditions, especially schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, mental retardation and paranoia. Information Overload supersedes normal, rational thought structures, forcing deviation into less restrictive mental procedures of so-called mental illness. SPK is trying to be a voice for those individuals condemned to the slow decay of mental hospitals and chemical/electro/surgical therapy, without fetishising them into blatant entertainment products. 'SONIC FOR MANICS' aims to be a vehicle for sharing mental experiences through sound. This DVD compiles material that marked the genesis of the group. The members at that time were known as Operator, Ne(H)il and Tone Generator. Like rare live moments of the bands, energetic performances covering music from "Leichenschrei" to "Information Overload," live rehearsal footage from "Auto Da Fe," slide shows, documentary and a filmed interview with Tone Generator, aka Domink Guerin, founding member and man behind Twin Vision.

Anonymous Schizo (aka ~S~), a visitor here, has graciously shared some superb & ultra-rare SPK recordings with us and I'll be adding them as time allows.

First up to be added is the impossible-to-find single No More b/w Contact/Germanik, SPK's first release. I'd never heard this before and always wondered what SPK sounded like in their inception. No More reminds me of the band Discharge (sort of speed-punk) complete with a guitar solo. The b-side tracks were obviously recorded with a different musical sensibility. This release was self-published by the band in an edition of 200 copies.

Next, we have a fresh copy of the See-Saw/Chamber Musik single; Chamber Musik is an earlier version of the same song on the 1982 Leichenschrei album. It was originally published by M-Squared Records in Australia. Check out the previous posting of the 1981 M-Squared compilation A Selection for the SPK track Zombod.

Also new to this posting is the Human Post Mortum film soundtrack. According to the Internet Movie Database, Human Post Mortum is an alternate title for the Despair video. You can buy a medium-grade bootleg of the Despair video on DVDr at Stumpy Discs. Stumpy himself tells us that "In the most revolting sequence an individual manoeuvres a detached head to perform clumsy fellatio on a penis protruding from the severed, lower extremities of a corpse." Or, you can download the video free (see below).

We also have the April 29, 1979 Live At Garibaldi's (Sydney, AU) concert recording. The Garibaldi's show is an incredible early concert by SPK; it's in stereo and the sound is terrific. It's a short recording (14:06) but it sure is sweet; the concert features a performance of Slogun that has to be heard to be believed. I've maintained the non-titles it was originally offered with, rather than giving the archive a cosmetic makeover.

Next is a Live At The Crypt recorded at the Cryptic One Club, Paddington, London, England, 25 April 1981 by Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions who also played that night. Sound is a little rough but it's not bad considering it was set to tape with a hand-held Sony Walkman.

From Science To Ritual was originally published with the Italian magazine VIVA. Some of the material is supposedly from the concerts at Al's Bar (24 April 1982) and Sala Borromini (12 November 1982) plus one song from the concert at an Oddfellows Hall. Anonymous Schizo has kindly included good quality scans of both the Dokument (I/II) pamphlets in the archive of this.

The last of the recent additions to this post is the Off The Deep End/Kambuja 12" single, published twenty years ago by Nettwerk in Canada. It's a sort of tribal-industrial work and was recorded a year after Graeme Revell had established his own label, Musique Brut. For nearly three years before this release he'd quit recording with a band and was only working with his wife, Sinan Leong.

Death In June - Nightmoves (1983)

"Nightmoves" was recorded live in Glasgow, Scotland on November 14th, 1983. This was Death In June's 9th performance. The line up for this event was Douglas P. (vocals, guitar, drums, keyboards), Patrick Leagas (vocals, drums, drum machine, keyboards, trumpet) and Tony Wakeford (bass). Opening for Death In June this night was The Primevals. Interesting enough, the Primevals are a pretty popular rock act in Glasgow. However. this gig took place before The Primevals "made it".

The Keyboard effects through the intro are an interesting twist, as is the slow, lumbering version of "Holy Water". This cassette was taken from a soundboard recording. The sound quality of this tape is good for a "bootleg".Nightmoves was released on Patrick Leagas Label, EYAS Media. Between 1980 and 1984, EYAS Media released eight cassette tapes of the Death In June's music. Some of this music has appeared on officially sanctioned Death In June releases (i.e. the EYAS Media release "Archive" and "Living Room" became "The Phoenix Has Risen", and the 2006 CD/DVD reissue of "The Guilty Have No Pride" came with the bonus DVD of material that was originally on the EYAS Media release "Live At the Fridge"). This particular cassette was a single sided release. Side B was blank.

Throbbing Gristle At The Brighton Polytechnic (1978)

IRC 11. Throbbing Gristle At The Brighton Polytechnic. I found it at a Tower Records clearance store in the late 1980's. Cost me 50 cents. I picked it up (along with a few other TG cassettes), some Sleep Chamber, Blackhouse, and a Nocturnal Emissions Cassette.

Recorded live February 25, 1978 at The Brighton Polytechnic in Brighton England and released on a 60 minute cassette in Binaural stereo. I know there is some confusion about the exact date. Some sources have this show from February 28th, but the most trusted sources have it as the 25th. (for instance; COUM Transmissions & Throbbing Gristle Era Actions at Genesis P-Orridge page.)
